With the establishment of
postal agencies in the latter
half of 1871, suspended
mailboxes were set up.
These suspended mailboxes
were made of unpainted wood
and were identified by the
words 'postal letter box' or
'mailbox.'

Reproduction

From about 1876 the plain
wood suspended mailboxes
came to be replaced by
suspended mailboxes
which were painted dark
green.

In 1888, a revision was
made which replaced the
dark green painted suspended
mailboxes with suspended
mailboxes which were painted
with transparent red lacquer.
The characters near the letter
drop were brush written with
sumi- ink.
In 1908, a revision was passed
to change suspended mailboxes
from wood to iron painted red.
