    Suspended Mailbox Established

    oo
    In about 1929, a suspended
    mailbox exclusively for
    air mail was introduced at
    the same time as the
    standard air mail mailbox.
    This suspended mailbox
    was made of wood.

    This suspended mailbox
    was made of sheet iron
    instead of cast iron. Two
    types were available, with
    the door over the opening
    for removing mail opened
    either vertically or
    sideways.
    The suspended mailbox
    shown in the photo above
    is the sideways opening
    type.

From 1937, Japan was at war
    and research was conducted
    into the possibility of
    substitutes for the suspended
    as well as the standard
    mailboxes. Numerous wooden
    suspended mailboxes appeared
    at this time.
In 1950, a decision was made
    to standardize the material
    and style of all suspended
    mailboxes throughout the
country. Up to that time, each
post bureau had set up its own
    suspended mailboxes. In 1968,
    the post bureau was renamed
    the Ministry of Posts and
    Telecommunications.
